Panasonic GH3 : First music video

I finally received my retail copy of a Panasonic GH3 ! I would love to do a review of the camera but i am saving that stuff for the new guide book. Instead I am going to talk about my first impressions working with the GH3 shooting a music video. Real world shooting and some basic green screen shots to see how well it grades compared to the GH2.

To truly test The camera, I went as basic as you can get for the entirety of the music video shoot and worked it through rain or snow. I didn’t use a single lens filter, matte box, rods, external monitor etc, for this entire music video. As you can see in the photo above its just me and a tripod and occasionally a slider.

Gear

Panasonic GH3 (Amazon, BHPhotoVideo)
Lumix 20mm 1.7 (Amazon, BHPhotoVideo) A consistent and versatile lens which at the current price is a realistic option for just about anyone so take note at what is possible with just one lens! Not to mention many of you have this one from its popularity since the GH2.
Manfrotto tripod (516 head , 545B body)
Atlas 10 35″ DSLR Slider Kit Honestly you can get the same low shot with a skateboard but the client happened to have already rented this

Camera Set up & Color Management

Codec : 72mbps 24p All-I mov codec Coming from the hacked GH2 the all i-frame codec was the most interesting one to test out since it was the high note of the GH2 hacking days. I am very curious to see if the GH3 does all i-frame any better than the GH2.

Color Profile : Natural, Contrast -4, Sharpness -4, Saturation -3, Noise Reduction -5 Of course grading is up to what the video calls for and many different looks can and will work for the same scene. So if you don’t like how i graded these images that’s ok, just keep in mind the context and the artists’ aesthetic which in this case, my client was a lyricist / rapper from over seas. A very interesting experience because it was a bit of an adventure editing something in a foreign language! As long as the audio syncs up right? I chose these settings in camera after a few tests and i decided natural gave the flattest curves to grade from.

Video

This video features color grading footage before and after. The artist in this video is the talented Malek Hfaiedh accompanied by the beautiful Linda.

Video Stills

Before & After video stills, compare graded and ungraded frames from the video.

That’s all for now, i hope you enjoyed this preview =)

  1. I heard about that but that's not going to stop me from testing the all i frame codec, even in a professional setting. I was very curious to see if it was at least comparable and hopefully better than the hacked GH2's all intra i frame patches. I will test 50m soon!

  2. You have some serious skills. The grading might be much in some shots but overall i think it looks very professional. Good job. I am still waiting on my GH3 pre-order, where did you buy it?

  3. I kinda dislike vignetting applied to images too bright (overexposed whites)..in colorista you should try to apply a very feathered elliptical mask and play with the density, I think it might give you a more refined look, but it's a lot less noticeable on moving images, the ones in the edited video aren't really a big issue….
one question: which sd card were you using? any problem with it not being fast enough? (I still have some trouble with that on my gh2).
the rendition of the lens is lovely! I really hope I can rent one someday!
    thanks for sharing bro!

  4. Hi Matteo Bevilacqua Thank you for your feedback
These images are a first test but i know what you mean about vignetting on over blown images, kinda silly looking and i don't like it much either. However these are just a first few tests on all sorts of lighting conditions and don't reflect the final product necessarily. However i am somewhat obliged to leave the over blown vignettes if the client likes / wants it.

As far as write speed, no i don't have issues but i do find that at some point i am not able to read back or preview in camera on the GH3. It still records and takes photos but unable to display images after a certain amount of data is saved. I use the 64 gig Sandisk 45MB/s Extreme with my GH3. On the GH2 i use the 32 gig Sandisk 30MB/s extreme with no issues on the gh2, only the occasional patch that needs a restart to play back the footage. On the GH3 when i cant play back footage i am stuck till i get to a computer, odd but it is what it is… maybe its a firmware issue.

  6. thanks a lot for the reply! I'm more concerned about the writing issues, the reading issues don't bother me that much, it's another reason to tell people "no I can't show you what we just filmed" so I can save some battery ๐Ÿ˜€

It was definitively crossing into queens for the car shot but i’m not positive what bridge, we drove and shot everywhere that day.

  8. I also use the 64 gig Sandisk 45MB/s Extreme with my GH3. Same problem: Can't read back or preview in camera on the GH3 or on macbook preview/import. I can open it with FCPX though.

  9. its so weird that it does that! i cant put the card in my card read either. I transfer the footage to my computer via the GH3 and included cable. Once i get all the footage on my drives i can just drop it in to Premiere and get to work as usual but it would be nice to not have to hook up the camera to transfer and use a card reader instead.
